A caregiver is a paid or unpaid member of a person’s social network who helps them with activities of daily living. For instance, the most common type of caregiver is the family caregiver, someone who takes care of a family member without pay; the other types are professional, independent, private, informal, and volunteer caregivers.
As a caregiver, you have options to come to Canada to become a permanent resident or work temporarily.
Permanent residence for caregivers
Keeping your temporary resident status
While working in Canada, you must always have a valid temporary residence status. Hence, you must apply to renew or update the conditions of your work permit before it expires.
Home Child Care Provider Pilot and Home Support Worker Pilot
Through these pilots, you’ll get an open work permit to come to Canada and work temporarily. Also, this work permit is occupation-restricted, doesn’t need an LMIA and lets you get the work experience you need to be eligible for permanent residence.
Moreover, you can use your experience as a home child care provider or support worker to evaluate your eligibility for permanent residence.
Temporary work for caregivers
Apply for a new work permit
In most situations, you can apply for a work permit in Canada temporarily under the TFWP. If you meet the following criteria:
- You’re in Canada and may apply for a work permit from within the country.
- You’re outside Canada and your employer applied for an LMIA before June 18, 2019.
- You’ll be working in Quebec.
Apply to extend your work permit
If you’re currently working in Canada as a caregiver, you may be eligible to extend your work permit through the Temporary Foreign Worker Program (TFWP). Your employer will need to get a positive Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) first.
